The UN and the African Union Activities on the Elimination of Slavery Manifestations in Mauritania

Abstract

The article analyzes the effectiveness of the international organizations activities on the elimination of slavery manifestations in Mauritania. In order to conduct the research and draw up conclusions, few research methods were applied, namely a comparative analysis method, historical and legal methods, as well as some elements of systematic research methods were used. The purpose of the article is to find the reasons which impede the implementation of the 1981 law abolishing slavery in Mauritania and at the same time to analyze the activities of international organizations in promoting the elimination of slavery manifestations in Mauritania. The object of the research is international protection of human rights. The research subject is the mechanism and methods which used by international organizations for the protection of human rights in Mauritania. During the research some national legal documents abolishing slavery in Mauritania and their law enforcement practice were analyzed. The reality is that some examples of slavery can be found in Mauritania nowadays. The UN and the African Union are two international organizations that have made some progress towards the elimination of slavery manifestations in Mauritania. For instance, Mauritania ratified all core UN human rights treaties, adopted a Roadmap to Combat the Consequences of Slavery and recognized slavery as a crime against humanity.
